History
Every year, Calpe (Alicante) transforms into a vibrant stage where history is brought to life with passion and color. The Moros y Cristianos of Calpe are much more than just an event—they are a celebration of identity, culture, and Mediterranean heritage, blending history, spectacle, and emotion into a truly unique experience.
Historical Origins:
A Mediterranean Legacy
The Moros y Cristianos commemorate the clashes between Christian and Muslim kingdoms during the Reconquista. In Calpe, this tradition is deeply rooted and dates back to the 18th century, although it was officially institutionalized in the 20th century.
Its connection to the devotion to Virgen de las Nieves, Calpe’s patron saint, marked a turning point, integrating religious, historical, and festive elements into a celebration that grows year after year.
Culture, Identity
and Civic Participation
These festivities wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of the “comparsas”, groups that prepare everything throughout the year. Calpe’s streets come alive, balconies are beautifully decorated, and locals and visitors alike are united in the same festive spirit. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, enjoy Alicante’s cuisine, and experience one of the most colorful festivals in the province up close.
